High Calendar history
Notes on the history of the High Calendar, compiled by Eshegen Virmad and Aricura Sulen, based on information provided by YHL.
The High Calendar circa 361
Nirai Kujen has yet to change the High Calendar; as such, the modern mothdrive does not exist. Remembrances do not yet involve elaborate torture — when heretics are called for in the course of a particular remembrance, they are simply executed.
Subjective observations: Virmad
Despite the seminar on the history of the High Calendar that he took in the Rahal academy, Virmad is still surprised — shocked, even — at just how sparse the calendar of remembrances in this era is. There's a whole week (eight-day) in the fourth month that's entirely remembrance-free, and several others scattered throughout the year where there are only minor remembrances (with no executions called for). He knew that remembrances had been added more frequently — and more violently — in the following centuries, but hadn't realized just how much more frequently.
The key takeaways for anyone who's going to be traveling in this period are:
- remembrances do not involve torture
- remembrances are not yet the daily — even "multiple times daily" — occurence that they will become over the subsequent 500 years (let alone beyond that)
